Lullaby Vignette

"Hush, little baby, don't say a word, Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird," my voice charms the air already thick with delicate peonies, sweet and chemical.

"And if that mockingbird don't sing, Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring," she assures while stifling sobs with a mother's touch and drying tears with the rag.

"And if that diamond ring turns brass, Mama's gonna buy you a looking glass," she looks down and just beams.

"And if that looking glass gets broke, Mama's gonna buy you a billy goat," Madonna and child.

"And if that billy goat don't pull, Mama's gonna buy you a cart and bull," never a camera when you want one.

"And if that cart and bull turn over, Mama's gonna buy you a dog named Rover," she consoles sweetly and credibly while pulling the tape gently and precisely.

"And if that dog named Rover won't bark. Mama's gonna buy you a horse and cart," you know what it's like to be in someone's arms and be completely in control.

"And if that horse and cart fall down, Well you'd have been the sweetest little baby in town," another place, another time...

But, this is my time, and you had no place in it.

Happy Halloween!
